Customs Cottage

Customs Cottage

Customs Cottage occupies a quiet spot on Mulberry Street, just back from the bustle of Teignmouth’s town centre. The seaside town wraps around the estuary of the River Teign, with red-sand beaches on one side and a working harbour on the other. From the cottage door, the river beach lies a short walk down the road, while the main town beach, pier and promenade are reached in minutes on foot.

The building itself carries historic character, having been carefully restored in recent years. Owners added a first-floor family bathroom and reconfigured the upper floors to give both bedrooms privacy, yet kept the original quirks intact. Inside, the cottage feels cosy and beach-inspired, with pale walls, natural textures and thoughtful details throughout.

On the ground floor, an open-plan layout combines kitchen, dining and living areas into one sociable space. The kitchen includes an electric oven, gas hob, full-size fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and microwave. A dining table seats four comfortably, and the living area has a large sofa facing a Smart TV. Gas central heating keeps the cottage warm whatever the weather, and free Wi-Fi covers the whole property.

A narrow staircase leads to the first floor, where a twin bedroom features cast-iron beds and a vintage wardrobe. A small landing holds a desk and chair, handy for quiet moments, while a nook beneath the stairs stocks books and games. The family bathroom on this level has a bath with shower over.

A second, steeper flight of stairs rises to the top-floor bedroom, furnished with a king-size bed, a single bed, and an en-suite shower room with heated towel rail. River views open from this level, offering glimpses of boats and the estuary beyond.

Outside, the cottage provides a rare benefit in central Teignmouth: a dedicated off-street parking space directly in front. A travel cot and stairgate are available, and one small dog is welcome. Bed linen, towels and a welcome pack come as standard.

The position suits those who prefer to leave the car behind. Pubs and restaurants line the streets nearby, including traditional inns on the back beach. The river beach offers boat hire and water activities, while the pier, mini-golf, skate park and pavilion sit within easy reach. Trains from Teignmouth station connect along the Riviera line, and coastal paths lead in both directions for longer walks.

Guests often highlight the cleanliness, thoughtful equipment and unbeatable central location. The steep internal stairs, however, mean the cottage best suits those with reasonable mobility.
