Devon Community Sauna

The Devon Community Sauna sits directly on Teignmouth’s seafront promenade, just behind the railings near the pier. A converted horsebox forms the structure, lined inside with dark sustainable timber and arranged with tiered benches around a central wood-burning stove. Up to eight people can use the space at once, with the stove producing steady, deep heat and minimal smoke.

Immediate access to the sea allows participants to move easily between the sauna and cold water immersion. This practice of alternating heat and cold supports circulation, reduces inflammation, and promotes a sense of vitality. The location itself enhances the experience: while inside, users can look out towards the water; stepping outside places them moments from the waves.

Run as a community interest company, the sauna places emphasis on inclusion. It operates as a social hub where people from different backgrounds meet, converse, and share the ritual. Staff trained in safe sauna use offer guidance, ensuring the facility remains welcoming to newcomers as well as regular attendees.

The project grew from a recognition that permanent coastal saunas were scarce along this stretch of Devon coastline. By establishing a fixed site on the promenade, the team aimed to make regular sauna use practical for local people while also providing a distinctive facility for those passing through. Sustainable elements such as local timber and low-impact heating align with the broader commitment to environmental responsibility.

The combination of wood-fired heat, open sea views, and the rhythm of the tides creates a distinctive atmosphere. Participants often linger in the surrounding area after sessions, extending the sense of calm and connection that the sauna fosters.

The presence of the sauna adds a contemporary wellbeing option to Teignmouth’s traditional seaside character. It complements activities such as walking the promenade or swimming, offering a structured yet relaxed way to engage with the coastal environment throughout the year.
