Shaldon Water Carnival
Shaldon Water Carnival combines carnival energy with regatta traditions on the shores of the Teign Estuary. Participants transform everyday boats into floating works of art – giant ducks, castles, rainbows, or themed vehicles – that drift past crowds gathered along the water’s edge. The parade demands ingenuity and teamwork, as crews navigate the currents while maintaining elaborate designs.
Daytime action centres on Ferry Beach, where sand sculpting contests invite builders to shape intricate models from the shoreline. Crab catching challenges draw younger participants into rock pools, nets in hand, searching for elusive catches. Children often lead a fancy dress parade, costumes reflecting nautical or imaginative themes, adding colour to the beachfront.
Stalls line the promenade with handmade crafts, local food offerings such as hog roasts, and drinks from nearby producers. Games and demonstrations keep the pace steady, while the estuary backdrop provides constant views across to Teignmouth. As daylight fades, activities move to The Green in the village centre. A barbecue fires up, live bands play, and a children’s disco encourages dancing under the open sky. The shift allows families to extend the day without rushing back to the beach.
Volunteers organise everything, channelling proceeds towards local groups and charities linked to youth activities. The committee encourages involvement through boat entries, stall setups, or general support, reinforcing ties within the village.
Shaldon’s compact layout suits the event perfectly. The beach and green sit close together, connected by short walks along Marine Parade. Spectators can move easily between water-based spectacles and land activities, with the ferry slipway offering vantage points for the parade.
The estuary setting enhances every element. Calm waters in the Shaldon Pool allow decorated boats to display details clearly, while the surrounding hills frame the scene. Community participation shines through, from boat builders to stall holders, creating an atmosphere rooted in shared effort.
The years event takes place Bank Holiday Monday 26th May 2025 – see the official website and facebook page for more details.
