Trade Winds Restaurant

Trade Winds Restaurant stands on Station Road in the heart of Teignmouth, a longstanding presence in the town’s dining scene. Andrew and Elle, who emigrated from Cyprus in the early 1960s, opened the restaurant in 1967. Their son Nick and his wife Soulla assumed responsibility in 2003, continuing the family tradition alongside Nick’s sister Soula. A comprehensive refurbishment in 2009 introduced modern kitchen facilities while preserving the establishment’s character.

The kitchen focuses on Greek Cypriot cooking, with all ingredients sourced locally and every dish prepared fresh by chefs Barny and Soulla. Classic offerings include moussaka, built with layers of aubergine, minced meat, and béchamel sauce, and kleftiko, where lamb slow-cooks until tender and aromatic. Souvlaki skewers, grilled and served with accompanying salads and rice, provide another staple. Seafood appears regularly, notably whole sea bass baked with herbs and lemon, alongside prawn saganaki enriched with feta and tomato.

Starters encourage sharing through meze selections. Traditional dips such as tzatziki, hummus, and taramasalata arrive with warm pitta, while dolmades and grilled halloumi add variety. Larger platters combine hot and cold items, suitable for groups.

Vegetarian choices remain plentiful, from stuffed peppers to imam baildi, the aubergine dish steeped in olive oil and garlic. Meat-focused plates, including stifado and afelia, reflect Cypriot home cooking with rich, slow-developed flavours.

The dining room maintains a straightforward yet comfortable layout, accommodating both intimate meals and larger gatherings. Attentive service from the family and staff complements the food, creating an atmosphere that balances informality with care. Generous portions characterise every course, ensuring diners leave satisfied.

Trade Winds rates highly with many reviews, earning consistent praise for the authenticity of its cooking, the warmth of its hospitality, and the quality of its execution. The restaurant also offers takeaway, allowing the same dishes to be enjoyed elsewhere.

Over decades, Trade Winds has embedded itself in Teignmouth’s culinary landscape, delivering Cypriot flavours prepared with skill and served with genuine hospitality.
